Drone Inspection of Telecom Towers: What Changes?

How aerial inspection changes the way tower and equipment condition is documented, and what to consider when planning it.

By META HEART Team Published Updated 1 min read

Mobile tower inspection has traditionally relied on technicians climbing, which takes time and carries risk. Drones allow towers and equipment to be documented in high resolution from multiple angles without climbing on every visit.

What can be documented?

  • Steel structure condition, corrosion and joints.
  • Mounted antennas and equipment, and their orientation.
  • Cables, brackets and accessories.
  • A 3D model of the tower where needed.

Planning it right

A good inspection starts by defining outputs: is the goal an equipment audit, structural observations, or both? Then flight paths are planned and permits coordinated in line with applicable regulations.

From images to decisions

The value is not the number of photos but a structured report locating and prioritising each finding, which can be linked to GIS to track assets over time.
